Work in digital capitalism covers a broad spectrum of work. In this debate, we will discuss work in the platform economy and the cultural sector with three experts.
We will first take a look at the working conditions and different forms of exploitation of workers: How do the (digital)shopfloor level, division of labor, and algorithmic management/surveillance alienate workers in Amazon warehouses and on Amazon Mechanical Turk? What are the outsourcing and control strategies for content moderation of social media companies such as Meta, Google, and Twitter?
Then we will look at ways of worker resistance: What are the sites of power struggles between workers and management? How and where do workers gain agency and get organized? Which role does transnational solidarity play between workers in the Global South and migrant workers in the Global North?
In the end, we will discuss alternatives to digital capitalism: What is the potential of co-operatives compared to precarious and individualized cultural sector work? How can co-operatives, despite their limitations of being embedded within capitalist market economies, contribute to a movement for transforming the future of work and inspire wider social change?
